Duties and Responsibilities of City Council

All duties and responsibilities of the Camden City Council specifically enumerated in the State of New Jersey (various and numerous sections) and in the Administrative Code of the City of Camden, Article II.

Generally, the duties and responsibilities include but are certainly not limited to the following:
  1. Approve contracts
  2. Approve grant applications
  3. Approve City’s Master Plan and Zoning regulations
  4. Approve redevelopment plans/blight declarations
  5. Approve/amend salaries and wages for all City Employees
  6. Approve/amend Classifications Schedule for all City employees titles
  7. Approve fee schedules for various functions; e.g. building permit fees, fees for business licenses, sit plan applications, etc.
  8. Authorize settlement of litigation
  9. Approve street vacations
  10. Approve sale/lease and purchases of City-owned property
  11. Approve changes to the Administrative code
  12. Approve certain personnel appointments; e.g. department directors, special officers, City Clerk/Deputy Clerk, etc.
  13. Resolve appeals from various boards (Planning, Zoning, etc.)
  14. Consent to Mayor’s appointment of various Boards, Authorities, Advisory Committees
  15. Approve regulations concerning business licenses, streets and sidewalks, public right-of-ways, rent control, etc.
  16. Create legislation.
