Marilyn Torres, a lifelong Camden resident who is a staunch advocate for public education. Ms. Torres has worked for the Camden City Board of Education for 27 years as the District Parent Coordinator. Like President Barack Obama, Ms. Torres affirms that an investment in education is not only a moral imperative, it is a necessity.
Ms. Torres is the Acting Chair and Vice President of the Camden County Human Relations Commission and Commissioner and Vice Chair of the City of Camden Housing Authority. She formerly served as Treasurer of the City of Camden Redevelopment Agency.
In 2002, New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman awarded Ms. Torres the Governor’s Award for achievement and service to her community. Ms. Torres hosted and produced a national Spanish language health education talk show, “ˇEntérate!” which aired on channel 19.
In her devotion to her community, Ms. Torres has held voluntary leadership posts in numerous civic organizations including the Association of Puerto Ricans on the March (APM), East Camden on the Move, the Hispanic Professionals Committee, Sensitivity and Cultural Awareness Now (CAN) and the National Association of Bilingual Education.
Ms. Torres is an outreach worker for Operation CeaseFire in Camden, an initiative funded through the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, to reduce gun violence in the city.
An alumna of Rowan University, Ms. Torres earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. A single mother of four sons, all of whom graduated from Camden public schools, Ms. Torres is blessed with eight grandchildren.
